This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Colorburst™ Deep Red Cape Fuchsia delivers one of the richest red tones you can get in a summer perennial, with burgundy stems and deep red, tubular blooms that keep coming from midsummer into fall. The flowers look like fuchsia, but this is not a true Fuchsia; it’s Phygelius × rectus ‘TNPHYCDR’, a sun-tolerant South African relative that handles garden conditions far better than tender fuchsias in the ground. It quickly reaches about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, giving you height for the middle of a border and enough scale to anchor a large container. We rely on this Phygelius when a planting needs real red that doesn’t turn pink or fade out by late summer.
The dangling trumpets are nectar-rich, so hummingbirds find it fast, with butterflies and other pollinators close behind. It behaves as an herbaceous perennial, yet can hold foliage through winter in mild regions, which improves its off-season value in zones 8–10. This cultivar is often less appealing to rabbits than softer-stemmed bedding plants, and it’s useful in exposed coastal sites or on slopes where you want color without fragile stems. Use it as a vertical punctuation in mixed beds, or as the central “thriller” in warm-season planters where red is usually hard to maintain.
Colorburst™ Deep Red Cape Fuchsia Care
Give Colorburst™ Deep Red Cape Fuchsia filtered sun to partial shade or partial sun; in cooler climates it can take more sun, while hot inland afternoons are easier with some shade. Choose a site with well-drained, organically enriched soil, and incorporate compost if your native soil is thin or sandy. This Phygelius is not picky about soil pH. In the first season, check moisture by feel and water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, then space irrigations farther apart once established, especially in cooler coastal gardens. Feed once in spring with a slow-release shrub and perennial fertilizer if growth is weak, otherwise skip feeding on already fertile ground.
Remove spent flower clusters as they finish to keep the plant looking crisp and to encourage continued flowering. In colder regions, cut stems back to basal growth in late winter or early spring after the risk of hard frost has passed, and use a light mulch to protect the crown. If grown in a container where winters are severe, move the pot to a sheltered spot so the crown does not freeze solid.
Colorburst™ Deep Red Cape Fuchsia Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart for a repeating rhythm in the border, and allow extra room where clumps may broaden over time. For containers, use at least a 16–18 inch diameter pot to support its height and keep the root zone from drying too quickly. Pair it with artemisia for a cool, silver foil, sedges for fine, arching texture at the base, and verbena for a lighter flower layer that doesn’t compete with the tubular form.
