What does this mean?
This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Colorburst™ Rose Cape Fuchsia (Phygelius × rectus ‘TNPHYCRO’ PPAF) is prized for its saturated purple-rose tubes that read deeper than typical pinks, especially against its clean green foliage. Mature plants typically reach about 20–30 inches tall and around 28 inches wide, with stems that can lift the flowers to roughly 30 inches. The long flowering window, often running from May through October, makes it a dependable mid-layer plant when you want consistent color without relying on a single peak moment. We reach for it when a border needs a warm, wine-toned accent that holds through summer.
The habit is upright to softly mounding, building a full crown that sits comfortably between lower edging plants and taller perennials. Nectar-rich blooms draw hummingbirds and other pollinators, and the flower clusters curve outward, so the color presents in small, repeated notes above the leaves. In mild winters it may stay partly green; in colder parts of its range it behaves as an herbaceous perennial and returns from the base. It performs well in mixed planters as both “filler” and “thriller,” with enough height to lift the color above trailing plants without overwhelming the container. Use it on banks or in coastal gardens where quick coverage and a rooted, stable presence are useful.
Colorburst™ Rose Cape Fuchsia Care
Plant so the crown sits level with the surrounding soil, and avoid burying it under a thick mulch layer. Give it filtered sun to partial shade, or full sun where summers are moderate; strong light improves flowering and keeps the stems sturdier. Provide average to organically enriched, well-drained soil. Soil pH is not a limiting factor for this species, but good drainage is key. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, then allow the root zone to dry moderately between irrigations once established. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if your soil is lean; in richer beds, supplemental feeding is often unnecessary.
Remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant neat and to encourage continued flowering along the stems. In colder regions, cut back to basal growth in late winter or early spring after the risk of hard frost has passed, and mulch lightly to protect the crown.
Colorburst™ Rose Cape Fuchsia Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart for a connected drift. Give closer spacing on slopes where you want quicker visual continuity. For containers, choose a pot at least 14–18 inches wide so the crown can broaden without drying too rapidly. Pair it with yarrow for a flatter, lighter foreground, catmint for a cool-toned haze at the base, and daylily for broader leaves that echo the plant’s upright lines without repeating the same flower form.
