What does this mean?
This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Colorburst™ Yellow Cape Fuchsia (Phygelius × rectus ‘TNPHYCY’ PPAF) brings clear, nectar-heavy yellow trumpets to the garden at a time when many perennials begin to fade. Flower clusters rise above green foliage from summer into fall, holding color through heat and extending well toward frost in mild regions. It quickly reaches about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, then can spread wider by underground stems. The dangling tubes give the plant depth and movement on the stem. We like it most where the flowers can be easily admired, such as along a path edge or lifted in a large container.
The habit is upright and clump-forming, with stems that behave herbaceous in cold winters but may stay semi-evergreen where temperatures stay moderate. Flowers are a consistent draw for hummingbirds and other pollinators, and it’s often less interesting to rabbits than many tender perennials (though browsing is never guaranteed). First introduced in 2019 through Monrovia, this Terra Nova selection traces back to South African cape fuchsia types that handle Mediterranean-style conditions. Use it as a tall mid-border accent, on a sunny hillside for erosion control, or as the “thriller” in summer pots where the bloom spikes can rise above spillers.
Colorburst™ Yellow Cape Fuchsia Care
Set the crown at the same depth it was growing in the pot, and firm the soil well so the plant doesn’t heave in winter. Give it filtered sun to partial shade, or partial sun in hotter climates; morning sun with afternoon shade keeps foliage looking clean while still producing strong bloom. Grow it in organically rich, well-drained soil.
It isn’t fussy about pH as long as drainage is reliable. Water when the top 2 inches of soil feels dry, especially during the first growing season while roots are establishing, then let it dry moderately between waterings once established. A light spring feeding is plenty in average garden soil; overly rich feeding can push soft growth at the expense of flowering.
Deadhead or clip off spent flower spikes to keep the plant tidy and to encourage continued bud set. In colder areas, cut stems back to basal growth in late winter or early spring after the worst freezes have passed, and mulch the root zone for extra protection. If grown in a container where winters are severe, move the pot to a protected spot so the crown doesn’t freeze solid.
Colorburst™ Yellow Cape Fuchsia Spacing
Space plants about 18–24 inches apart for a loose mass; use closer spacing when you want faster fill on a bank. For containers, start with a pot at least 16–18 inches wide, or larger if you want it to carry the centerpiece role by itself. Pair it with yarrow for a dry-leaning border, catmint for a soft, low edging, and ornamental grasses for contrast and seasonal texture.
