Olea europaea, or Common Olive Tree, is often grown as an ornamental tree, although the black olives are edible. The upright growth habit features smooth gray bark that develops into a twisted, knotty texture along the trunk with age. Elongated ovate foliage emerges in the spring as light green and settles into a dark, glossy green with a silvery underside. Common Olive Trees grown indoors retain their foliage all year. Fragrant white flowers grow in clusters known as panicles. Enjoy the blooms from late spring through early summer and fruit from midsummer until early fall. The olives are green to start and gradually fade into black.
Best Locations For Growing Common Olive Tree
The fruit of the Common Olive Tree is edible, and the leaves are non-toxic, making this plant safe for homes with children and pets. You can locate this plant in any room of your home. Trees outdoors can reach 20 to 30 feet tall, but houseplants can be pruned to maintain a more manageable height.
Common Olive Tree Sunlight Requirements
Olea europaea requires bright sunlight. Increased sunlight is necessary for the tree to flower and set fruit. Indirect sunlight is best for young trees, and direct sunlight can be slowly introduced as the trees age. Select a position with bright sunlight, such as an east, west, or south-facing window.
Common Olive Tree Care
Prune the tree as needed to ensure it fits your space. Repot the Olive Tree when the roots grow through the drainage holes in the pot or when you notice slower growth. Upgrade to a container two inches wider than the previous when repotting, and use soil that allows excess water to drain.
Watering Common Olive Tree
Let the soil mostly dry before watering again. Wait until the top few inches of soil are dry before watering the Common Olive Tree. This tree naturally grows in climates with dry summers and likes to dry out between watering sessions.
Low to average humidity is best for the Common Olive Tree. This tree thrives in the low humidity of the Mediterranean region, but it can easily and happily live in average humidity. Increased humidity is problematic, so keep this tree away from naturally humidity areas like bathrooms.
Feeding Common Olive Tree
Fertilize the Common Olive Tree using a balanced plant food. Water-soluble fertilizers can be applied when watering, reducing the risk of burning or damaging the roots. Fertilize monthly during the spring and summer when the tree is actively growing. Stop fertilizing olive trees in the fall and winter when growth slows.

Plant Shipping
Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.
Winter to Early Spring
We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.

We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.
