Night Light Chamaecyparis (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Night Light') features bright yellow-green foliage that takes on a hint of bronze in cooler months, keeping your garden or patio full of color all year. Its dense, rounded habit forms a compact shrub about 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, perfect for smaller landscapes or decorative containers. Sturdy branches hold their shape, providing a refined look without the hassle of constant pruning. This reliable evergreen makes a stunning focal point or a cheerful backdrop for more colorful plantings.
A living Night Light Chamaecyparis at the holidays offers all the beauty of traditional decorations, plus the bonus of planting it outside later. It brings a fresh hint of greenery into your home during winter’s shorter days, and it makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves distinctive evergreens. Later on, you can relocate it to a sunny spot in the garden, where it will continue to brighten your surroundings.
Holiday Night Light Chamaecyparis Care
From January to early spring, keep your shrub near a window with bright light, watering just enough to keep the soil slightly moist. If the indoor air is especially dry, a quick misting every now and then helps prevent leaf tips from browning. Every so often, rotate the pot to ensure the shrub receives balanced light and maintains a symmetrical shape.
Once milder temperatures return, place it outside for a few hours daily over the course of a week or so to help it adjust. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil, digging a hole slightly wider than the root ball. Set it so the top of the root ball is at or just above ground level, water thoroughly, and then apply a thin layer of mulch around the base. With time, your Night Light Chamaecyparis will become a radiant, low-maintenance highlight in your landscape.
