Crinkle Pilea (Pilea nummulariifolia) is an easy-to-care-for tropical foliage plant. The heavily textured foliage grows and spreads, making it easy to understand the other common name of Creeping Charlie Plant. Crinkle Pilea is an excellent plant for beginning houseplant gardeners who may be likely to either neglect the plant or give it too much love.
Best Locations For Growing Crinkle Pilea
Crinkle Pilea should be placed in the brightest and warmest room of the house. Often this is a bathroom or kitchen. The trailing habit of the mature plant makes it an excellent choice to grow in a hanging basket or on a shelf where this plant can ramble and sprawl.
Crinkle Pilea Sunlight Requirements
Pilea grows well in most light levels from indirect bright to medium light. East, south, or west-facing windows are ideal, although this is a good plant for growing under artificial lights in a basement or other area with very low lighting.
Crinkle Pilea Care
Crinkle Pilea likes to be repotted on a regular basis. Fresh soil helps these plants remain vigorous growers. Only go up one or two pot sizes when repotting Pilea. Too large a pot will keep the soil wet longer, encouraging root rot and pest infestations. Regular pinching of the branch tips stimulates bushy growth and provides cuttings for propagation. The stems readily form roots when started in water.
Watering Crinkle Pilea
Pilea prefers to have its soil dry out in between waterings. Water the pot thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Discard any excess water standing in saucers or cache pots. Pilea enjoys moderate levels of humidity, around 40%. Supplemental humidity may be needed in winter when houses are drier and warmer.
Feeding Crinkle Pilea
Pilea does not require heavy fertilizing but does appreciate regular nutrition. Adding a slow-release, balanced granular houseplant food to the potting soil is the easiest way to fertilize. When Pilea is repotted in the spring, mix the manufacturer's recommended amount into the soil
