Looking for a rose fit for royalty? Look no further—this variety was named after Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden, who was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and an accomplished landscape gardener and artist. The Crown Princess Margareta English Climbing Rose produces beautiful, medium-sized, apricot-orange rosettes. It’s a vigorous climber, reaching heights of up to 6-12 feet. It’s an ideal short climber for walls, fences and arches. This rose’s fragrant blooms also attract butterflies.
This stunner is a repeat bloomer, producing sumptuous flowers from late spring until frost. The blooms produce a strong, fruity fragrance, and are excellent as cut flowers. The Crown Princess Margareta English Climbing Rose also has excellent disease resistance.
Crown Princess Margareta English Climbing Rose Plant Care
Plant this rose in rich soil amended with well-rotted manure or compost. It will do well in a variety of soil types including clay or sandy. It’s also not picky about soil pH. Keep the rose fed by applying fertilizer several times during the growing season. A slow-release, organic fertilizer can be used during the winter so that the next year’s shoots and buds will come out lush. If you regularly cut flowers for the home, fertilize the plant every week. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost. This rose favors moist conditions, but take care not to drown your plant. Provide more water from budding to flowering. After it has begun blooming, wait until the soil is basically dry before watering again. This rose variety will do well in full sun to partial shade.
This plant has strong sprouting abilities, so pruning is necessary to help avoid diseases and pests. After the first bloom, prune lightly. Cut off faded flowers and thin overlapping branches. During the winter, careful pruning is recommended as well.
Crown Princess Margareta English Climbing Rose Plant Spacing
In the garden, space each plant at least 4-5 feet apart. You can also grow Crown Princess Margareta in a pot—just make sure that your pot is large enough to accommodate a plant that can reach 6-12 feet high. The recommended pot size for climbing roses is 7 to 10 gallons.
