Compact, shade-tolerant, and genuinely container-friendly, Dannahue® English Shrub Rose solves the “no sunny border” problem. Rosa 'Ausa6b15' grows into a tidy, upright shrub about 3½ feet tall and up to 4 feet wide, carrying clusters of soft apricot blooms that glow even in lower light. While many English roses demand prime sun, this one keeps flowering with real energy in partial shade and tighter urban spaces. The blooms are medium-sized and cupped, produced in generous waves that keep the plant lively through the season.
Dannahue® was bred by Carl Bennett for David Austin and introduced in 2023. Its name honors Danny Clarke, “The Black Gardener,” reflecting a push toward more inclusive, accessible gardening. It combines manageable size with a bright, fruity fragrance—lemon zest, lychee, and fresh apricot layered together. The bush stays shapely rather than sprawling, making it easy to position against a wall or along a fence. It also attracts pollinators and can develop decorative hips if late blooms are left in place.
Dannahue® English Shrub Rose Care
Give it full sun where possible, but don’t hesitate to use a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade. Plant into well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, and a slightly acidic pH around 6.0–6.5. Water thoroughly after planting, then provide a deep soak when the soil several inches down begins to dry, rather than watering lightly and often. Apply a balanced rose fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush to maintain steady bloom production. In containers, ensure drainage holes remain clear and refresh the top layer of potting mix each spring.
Prune in late winter by shortening stems to maintain a rounded outline and removing any weak interior growth. Snip off faded flower clusters to prompt fresh buds. In colder climates, mound mulch around the base after the ground cools to protect the crown. Avoid overly dense planting that restricts air circulation.
Dannahue® English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space plants about 4 feet apart to allow the shrub to fill out without crowding. For container planting, choose a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep to support consistent moisture and root development. Pair with hellebore for early-season contrast, ajuga for a soft ground layer, or compact boxwood for structure in a small courtyard setting.
