Many gardeners turn to Sweet Alyssum for early spring color, and Dark Knight™ Sweet Alyssum can certainly fit the bill for brightening the dull days before most flowers begin their bloom. However, this variety will bloom all summer, which sets it far apart from the pack. The sweetly fragrant flowers are a deep shade of purple that pops against the medium-green foliage. Bees and butterflies flock to the masses of ever-blooming flowers, as well. and Dark Knight™ Sweet Alyssum is a hardy annual that blooms until the first hard frost, so they provide the fall interest that is much-needed in most gardens and containers.
You can expect your Sweet Alyssum to be a dependable trailing “spiller” in your container plantings. They can trail up to 24” in a container. Plus, they offer a constant show of color when planted in the garden as an annual border plant or groundcover. Both cold- and heat-tolerant, you’ll notice that your Dark Knight™ Sweet Alyssum is a dependable bloomer from early spring until fall. If you have a sunny space in need of color, give this beauty a try.
Dark Knight Sweet Alyssum Care
Dark Knight™ Sweet Alyssum doesn’t require deadheading and can withstand a variety of spring, summer and fall temperatures. However, it does require regular watering. Because of its water needs, try planting in a larger planter that will not dry out as quickly as a smaller one. Maximize container performance with regular applications of a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer starting in mid-summer. An annual application of compost or fertilizer will do for Sweet Alyssum planted in garden beds.
Dark Knight Sweet Alyssum Spacing
Opt for larger containers for your Sweet Alyssum to ensure maximum water retention. Container plant spacing should be 6 to 8”. When using as an annual groundcover or border plant, allow for 12-18” of space between plants.
