Darkside of the Moon Astilbe is a striking perennial plant known for its deep purple-black foliage and delicate raspberry-pink flowers, which add interest and color to shade gardens and borders. It is a member of the Saxifragaceae family and is native to China. One of the main attractions of Darkside of the Moon is its unique coloring, resulting from the plant's high levels of anthocyanin, a pigment that gives the foliage its dark hue. In addition, the plant's pink flowers, which appear in late spring or early summer, provide a beautiful contrast against the dark leaves.

Darkside of the Moon Astilbe is not known to be fragrant. It has a clump-forming perennial that will die back to the ground in the winter. It is relatively disease resistant and deer resistant, and moderately drought tolerant, making it a low-maintenance plant for all gardeners. However, it is important to provide the plant with regular moisture, especially during dry periods, to ensure optimal growth and flowering. Darkside of the Moon Astilbe is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for plant that is well suited for gardens with partial shade.

Darkside of the Moon Astilbe Care

Darkside of the Moon Astilbe is a relatively easy plant to care for and can be grown in a variety of soil types as long as they are well draining. It prefers a soil pH that is slightly acidic to neutral and does well in rich, organic soil. This plant can tolerate full sun as long as it is provided with adequate moisture, but it will generally perform best in partial sun or dappled shade. Make sure to water Darkside of the Moon regularly, especially during dry periods. In addition, this astilbe benefits from regular fertilization every four to six weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering; use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. However, it is important not to over-fertilize the plant, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Prune Darkside of the Moon Astilbe in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. To prune the plant, cut back the old foliage to the ground. This will allow the plant to produce new healthy foliage and encourage vigorous flowering. It is also a good idea to remove damaged or diseased foliage as it occurs.

Darkside of the Moon Astilbe Spacing

Space Darkside of the Moon Astilbe about 24 inches apart to allow for proper growth and air circulation. Adequate spacing is essential to prevent overcrowding, which leads to decreased flowering and increased disease susceptibility.

    Great plants, but slow...

Posted by CLee on Jul 22, 2023

The 2 plants were a nice size and lovely but had suffered some due to the 6 day transport as they traveled all over with UPS in the summer heat. As a result, about a third of the leaves shriveled up and dropped but the plants are in the ground and recovering nicely. They'll look great next year. Customer Support was very patient with me as I stressed about the delay in arriving. ? Can't say much for UPS though - one box was crushed, they delivered them to my state then back out of state then back in...and had horrible customer support.

    they start blooming!

Posted by Audrey Weir on Jan 16, 2023

The plants were received in great condition, and they started blooming just weeks after they were planted. The flowers are very pretty, and I'm so glad I chose this astilbe variety!
