Darwin Hybrid Impression Tulip Mix Bulbs produce oversized mid-spring flowers in a coordinated range of pink, apricot, red, and salmon. These Darwin Hybrids are known for substantial flower heads and thick stems, reaching about 22 inches tall when in bloom. The 10-bulb pack contains large 12 cm bulbs selected from four warm-toned Impression types, giving a small planting considerable presence. 

Darwin Hybrid tulips were developed by crossing older tall Darwin-type tulips with Fosteriana tulips, combining large flowers with stronger perennial performance. Their sturdy stems handle typical spring wind and rain better than many more delicate tulip classes, and the flowers are well suited to cutting. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, they can return for multiple seasons when bulbs receive a cold winter, good drainage, and a relatively dry summer rest. Use the mix through perennial borders, beside spring walkways, in cutting beds, or in deep patio pots where the nearly 2-foot stems can stand above lower seasonal plants.

Plant Darwin Hybrid Impression Tulip Mix Bulbs in fall after the soil has cooled, preferably several weeks before the ground freezes, so winter temperatures can provide the chilling needed for April bloom. Give the bulbs full sun to partial shade, with abundant spring light favoring strong stems and good flower production. The soil should be loose, well-drained and loamy with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0; keep the bulbs away from low ground that remains saturated after rain.

Place each bulb 6 to 8 inches below the soil surface with the pointed end facing upward, then soak the planting area once so soil settles firmly around it. Begin watering during active spring growth when the upper soil dries, then allow the bed to become progressively drier after flowering as the bulbs prepare for dormancy. Apply bulb fertilizer according to label rates at planting or as leaves emerge in spring. A light 1- to 2-inch mulch layer can moderate winter temperature swings in colder gardens.

Clip off faded flower heads before seed develops, but keep the stems and leaves attached while they remain green. Wait until the foliage turns yellow and loses its firmness before removing it, since this post-bloom period replenishes the bulb for the following spring. Older plantings that become congested can be lifted after the foliage disappears and replanted in fall. Tulip bulbs and foliage are toxic if eaten by dogs, cats, and horses.

Allow 3 to 6 inches between bulbs in garden beds, planting them in clusters rather than isolated singles for a fuller spring display. Containers should be at least 12 inches deep and have unobstructed drainage, with enough soil depth to accommodate the bulbs comfortably. In zones 3-5, move planted pots to an unheated garage, shed, or another cold sheltered area in winter where they can chill without repeated deep freezing.

Catmint is a useful perennial partner because its lower mound develops around the time tulip foliage is beginning to decline, and both plants perform well in sunny, well-drained beds. Spirea works well nearby in larger borders, providing lasting shrub structure after the tulips finish and the bulbs disappear underground for summer. For containers, pansies can occupy the lower level around the tulip stems during cool spring weather while sharing similar moisture needs during active growth.
