Why have just one Yarrow plant when you can have three? The Desert Eve™ Yarrow collection is a sunset in a pot. Achillea millifolium Desert Eve™ Red, Rose, and Yellow bloom nonstop until late fall and attract pollinators by the masses. The clump-forming foliage grows and spreads quickly, allowing you to fill in naturalized areas and create meadows in one to two growing seasons. The flowers are not bothered by heat, humidity, or salty winds at the seaside and are the definition of low maintenance.
Yarrow is naturally disease and pest resistant. Deer rarely browse on even the most tender early shoots. Desert Eve™ Yarrow has extraordinary drought tolerance after fully establishing and is truly a plant-it-and-forget-it perennial. The compact tufts of foliage remain semi-evergreen in the warmer growing zones, but go dormant in USDA zones 2-7 during the winter. The fragrant foliage and flowers make a great addition to seasonal fresh or dried flower arrangements. Yarrow is at home both in meadow plantings or more structured cottage gardens, where the textures of the leaves and flowers provide contrast against larger and more blousy plants.
Desert Eve™ Yarrow Collection Care
Yarrow grows the best in soil on the dry side and as much sun as possible. Yarrow in partly shaded locations will thrive if the soil is very well drained and irrigation is kept to a minimum. Sandy, nutrient-deficient soils are well tolerated. Water plants sparingly but consistently for the first growing season or two until well established. As plants mature, they only require supplemental watering during long periods of drought or heat. Fertilizing is rarely required, although a 2-3 inch layer of organic compost can help to cool the root zone during the summer months.
No pruning or deadheading is needed for Desert Eve™ Yarrow. The flowers are generally self-cleaning and the overall shape of the plant remains compact all growing season. Remove spent top growth in the spring just as the new shoots are emerging. Spring cleanup instead of fall cleanup allows for beneficial insects to use the flowerheads and foliage as cover through the winter months. It also helps to mark the plants, so that they are not disturbed or accidentally removed during winter weeding sessions.
Desert Eve™ Yarrow Collection Spacing
The overall height and spread for Desert Eve™ Yarrow is a tidy and compact 18 inches. Space plants 18 inches from each other or other established perennials. Container-grown plants will tolerate closer spacing. You can grow all three plants together in a pot with at least a 16-inch diameter.
