- Stunning Flowering Succulent
- Low Maintenance
- Pink & Red Flowers
- Bright Sunlight in South Facing Window
It is hard to believe that a succulent can produce the stunning flowers you will see on a Desert Rose (Adenium obesum). The large, rose-shaped flowers usually appear in late spring or early summer. Even when not in bloom this plant shows off deep green waxy leaves and a fat, unique light-colored trunk. This native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula uses little water and thrives in heat. Grow it as a houseplant all winter in cool zones and move Desert Rose out to your patio or deck in summer for some full sun and heat.
Most Desert Rose plants have a bonsai appearance. Outside in hot climates, the plants can grow up to 9 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. But your container-grown Desert Rose will grow only a few feet high. Choose a special container; your Desert Rose will look beautiful on the floor or a table. Desert Rose usually goes dormant, which means it drops its leaves in winter; this helps the plant be stronger for spring growth and bloom. Even when dormant, the trunk provides interest in houseplant arrangements.
Desert Rose Care
Give Desert Rose plenty of bright light by placing it near a South-facing window. Water only after the soil has dried completely. Cut back on watering even more in winter until the plant begins to leaf out. Keep your Desert Rose in a cool location of your home. It might not go dormant if temperatures always hover at 70 degrees or higher. Add a balanced fertilizer every month during the growing and flowering season of your plant. Don’t fertilize Desert Rose in winter.
Desert Rose Spacing
Desert Rose is an outdoor plant only in the hottest areas of the United States (zones 11 and 12). It cannot handle frost, so it is best to grow it alone in a container so you can bring it inside if there is any chance of frost.
