The textured foliage of Dinosaur Kale, or Kale 'Toscano’, gives this heirloom variety a unique look and inspired its name. The large foliage is dark green, has a blistered appearance, and grows on sturdy stems in a rosette formation. This plant is low maintenance and fast growing. Harvest the leaves at any time and use them raw or cooked.

Dinosaur Kale Care

Grow this leafy green in full sun to part shade in rich, well-drained soil. Dinosaur Kale is a cold hardy plant, so it can last into the fall, but wait until after the last frost of the spring to plant it. Space plants 24 inches apart, so the large foliage has plenty of room.

Growing Dinosaur Kale

Dinosaur Kale is a large plant that grows 18 to 24 inches tall and equally as wide. The plant reaches maturity as early as 65 days, but the leaves can be picked at any time. Harvest the larger outer leaves first and let the inner leaves fill in.

Grow Dinosaur Kale directly in the ground or in a 12-inch container with drainage holes. Plants in containers still need full sun and should be watered daily to keep the soil moist.

Watering Dinosaur Kale

Kale can handle dry conditions, but this plant prefers consistent moisture. Water during a dry spell to maintain growth and help the plant thrive.

Feeding Dinosaur Kale

Amend the soil with organic compost before planting or apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone after planting. Kale is not a heavy feeder, but the mulch supports the plant and retains moisture.
