Drama Queen™ Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hokomadraq’ USPPAF, CPBRAF) delivers bold pink mophead blooms from late spring through fall on a compact, well-branched plant. The saturated flower color stands out against deep green foliage, creating strong contrast in small garden spaces. Mature plants hold a rounded shape at just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, which makes placement simple in modern landscapes and patio plantings. In our garden beds, it has proven dependable for repeat bloom through the season without constant attention.
Hydrangea macrophylla is native to coastal regions of Japan and is prized for its large leaves and full flower heads. Drama Queen™ is deciduous, with sturdy stems and a naturally tidy habit. Flower color shifts with soil chemistry, ranging from pink in neutral to slightly alkaline soils to more purple-blue tones in acidic conditions with available aluminum. The blooms are suitable for cutting and dry well for arrangements. Use this hydrangea in shaded borders, foundation plantings, cottage-style gardens, or low flowering hedges. It also performs well in decorative containers where soil conditions can be managed precisely.
Drama Queen™ Bigleaf Hydrangea Care
Plant in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, or bright filtered light. Protect from harsh late-day sun in warmer climates to reduce leaf scorch. Provide consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. For blue to purple tones, maintain a soil pH between 5.2 and 5.8; for pink blooms, aim for a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Water deeply when the top few inches of soil begin to dry, especially during heat. Apply a balanced flowering shrub fertilizer in early spring and repeat lightly after the first bloom cycle if needed.
Remove spent flowers by cutting back to the first healthy set of buds. Avoid heavy pruning, since this hydrangea forms buds on both old and new growth. In early spring, thin out weak or winter-damaged stems to improve structure. In colder regions, apply mulch in late fall to protect roots and lower stems from freeze-thaw damage.
Drama Queen™ Bigleaf Hydrangea Spacing
Space plants about 2 feet apart for a continuous border or low hedge. Allow extra room when mixing with other shrubs so each plant keeps its rounded form. For containers, use a pot at least 16 to 18 inches wide with good drainage. Combine with shade-tolerant companions such as foamflower, dwarf hosta, or trailing bacopa to soften the edge and highlight the flower color without crowding the root system.
