Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Red that holds its depth in full sun is hard to find in annuals. Dreamtime® Jumbo Red Strawflower delivers saturated, orange-red bracts that stay rich from late spring through frost on compact plants just 10–12 inches tall and wide. Bracteantha bracteatum ‘Bondre 11100’ was developed for tighter habit and larger blooms, giving it stronger garden presence than older, looser strains. The mounded form stays uniform, making it easy to design with and simple to maintain.
Native to eastern Australia, strawflower evolved for sun and lean soils, and that durability shows here. The papery blooms are excellent for cutting and drying, holding both color and structure indoors for months. Dreamtime® Jumbo Red performs reliably in beds, edging, and mixed patio containers through hot weather. In our experience, it keeps its rounded shape better than many red annuals that sprawl by midsummer.
Dreamtime® Jumbo Red Strawflower Care
Plant in full sun for sturdy stems and the deepest flower color. Use fast-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH around 6.0–7.0, and avoid heavy clay unless amended with grit or compost. Water thoroughly after planting, then irrigate when the top layer of soil dries out rather than on a fixed schedule. Established plants handle moderate dryness, but prolonged soggy conditions can lead to decline. Feed with a water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks during active growth to support continuous bud set.
Deadhead regularly to keep new flowers forming. If plants begin to look tired in late summer, trim back lightly and resume feeding to refresh growth. In warm, frost-free regions strawflower may behave as a short-lived perennial, but it should be treated as a seasonal annual where winters are cold.
Dreamtime® Jumbo Red Strawflower Spacing
Space plants 16 inches apart in landscape beds to allow full air circulation and mounding. For container planting, use one plant in a 10–12 inch pot, or cluster several in a larger bowl for a solid block of red.
We use Dreamtime® Jumbo Red Strawflower when a planting needs real heat without overpowering neighboring colors. In sunny borders, pair with black-eyed Susans and blanket flowers for a bold, summer display. For mixed containers, tuck it beside lantana and trailing bacopa to balance strong color with softer texture.
