Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty Bulbs deliver deep blue flowers accented by paler blue falls and a bright yellow signal at the center of each bloom. Iris × hollandica 'Sapphire Beauty' reaches 20 to 24 inches tall on slim, straight stems that make excellent cut flowers and take up only a narrow strip of garden space. This 25-pack of 8+ cm bulbs flowers from late spring into early summer, filling the seasonal gap after many tulips have finished. 

Dutch iris grows from true bulbs rather than the exposed rhizomes of bearded iris. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, it can return and multiply if winters provide adequate chilling and the soil drains freely. The narrow foliage and upright stems fit easily into cutting gardens, mixed perennial beds, and seasonal plantings where later-growing plants eventually occupy the same space. Deer and rabbits generally avoid Dutch iris, but the flowers are useful to visiting pollinators.

Plant Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty Bulbs in fall a few weeks before the ground freezes, setting them 4 to 5 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward. Full sun produces the strongest flowering, but partial shade can work if plants receive several hours of direct light. A fertile, freely draining loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal; heavy clay should be improved before planting so winter moisture does not collect around the bulbs.

After planting, soak the bed once to close air pockets around the bulbs, then let seasonal rainfall handle most of the moisture until active growth resumes. While stems and leaves are developing in spring, water when the upper soil begins to dry, keeping the root zone moderately moist rather than saturated. As foliage yellows after flowering, gradually cut back supplemental irrigation so the bulbs can move into summer dormancy under drier conditions. Apply a low-nitrogen bulb fertilizer as shoots appear in spring, following label rates.

For bouquets, cut stems when the first bud is beginning to open and leave as much foliage on the plant as possible. Faded flowers can be clipped away, but the leaves should remain until they yellow on their own and finish replenishing the bulb. Remove the spent foliage once it separates easily from the plant, and leave established bulbs in place unless declining performance or poor drainage makes replanting necessary.

Space bulbs about 6 to 9 inches apart in beds, or arrange groups of 10 or more for a stronger blue display through a border or cutting garden. In containers, place bulbs about 3 inches apart in a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with open drainage holes. Potted bulbs in colder parts of the growing range can spend winter in an unheated garage or similarly sheltered cold space, with the potting mix kept only lightly moist until spring growth begins.

Thyme works especially well around Sapphire Beauty in sunny well-drained beds because its low growth leaves the iris stems unobstructed. Petunias can take over the color display in large containers after the iris finishes during the warmer part of the season. For a longer-lived landscape pairing, butterfly bushes provide a later summer flowering backdrop and leave ample open ground in spring for Dutch iris bulbs to emerge.
