Feature

Tiny Tank™ Dwarf Cast Iron Plant adds dense evergreen foliage to shade without taking over the planting bed. Aspidistra elatior 'Barr01' forms compact clumps of dark green leaves that rise from the ground and stay shorter than traditional cast iron plant. At about 15 to 18 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, it fits foundation beds, shaded borders, containers, and indoor rooms with limited light. We find it especially helpful under deep eaves or tree canopies where many flowering plants thin out.

This patented dwarf selection keeps the tough nature that made cast iron plants popular for difficult sites. The slow growth habit means it holds a neat shape for years with little correction. It tolerates heat, humidity, dry shade after establishment, and occasional missed watering indoors. Use it as a low evergreen mass, a textural edging plant, or a quiet foliage anchor beside shaded steps and covered patios.

Tiny Tank™ Dwarf Cast Iron Plant Care

Plant Tiny Tank™ Dwarf Cast Iron Plant in full shade to part shade, with morning sun acceptable and direct afternoon sun avoided. It grows best in moist but well-drained organic soil, including amended loam, sand, or clay, with an acidic to slightly acidic pH preferred. Drainage is more important than richness, since soggy soil can lead to root problems.

Water regularly during the first growing season so the root system settles in, then let the soil dry slightly between soakings. Established outdoor plants handle dry periods well, while container and indoor plants should be watered when the upper soil feels dry. Feed lightly in late winter or early spring with a slow-release fertilizer, and expect slower growth during winter dormancy.

Pruning is limited to grooming old, yellow, or damaged leaves at the base with clean hand pruners. Avoid cutting healthy leaves in half, since trimmed foliage will not repair its natural shape. For containers north of its hardy range, overwinter indoors in bright indirect light and keep watering lighter until active growth returns.

Tiny Tank™ Dwarf Cast Iron Plant Spacing

Space Tiny Tank™ Dwarf Cast Iron Plant 18 to 24 inches apart for a filled-in border or mass planting, and allow 3 to 4 feet when using individual clumps as accents. Use a 10- to 14-inch container for a young plant, sizing up slowly as the clump widens. In the ground, combine it with ajuga, dead nettle, barrenwort, or pieris shrubs in shaded beds where low light, organic soil, and moderate moisture suit the planting.
