The large, arrow-shaped leaves of the Ebony Alocasia lend a lush tropical feel. The stems and foliage are a deep-green color that looks nearly black, while beautifully contrasting leaf veins are light green to silver. The Ebony Alocasia is also known as an African shield plant, elephant ear, or Alocasia Morocco.
Best Locations For Growing Ebony Alocasia
This air-filtering architectural powerhouse can add interest to any room as a floor plant given conditions are suitable. It requires temperatures above 60 degrees F to thrive and dislikes temperature fluctuations, so avoid drafty windows and areas near heating or air conditioning vents. During warm weather, it also makes an excellent accent outdoors in a shaded area. Alocasia is toxic, so use this plant cautiously around pets and children.
Ebony Alocasia Sunlight Requirements
In the wild, Alocasias grow on the forest floor, so they thrive in dappled sunlight. In the home, they perform best with bright indirect light; too much hot, direct sun can lead to leaf burn. An area with four hours of bright indirect light or an east-facing window with only morning light is ideal. Lower light levels slow growth and make the foliage even darker.
Ebony Alocasia Care
Standard houseplant potting soil that is loose and nutrient rich but offers good drainage works well for the Ebony Alocasia. Snip off any yellowing or dead foliage near the base of the plant to keep it tidy and discourage pests. Spider mites find Alocasias particularly attractive, so keep these pests at bay by regularly misting and wiping down the large leaves.
Watering Ebony Alocasia
The Ebony Alocasia prefers soil to stay consistently, lightly moist and enjoys areas with high humidity. Water the plant deeply whenever the top couple of inches of soil are dry to the touch. In dry conditions, pebble trays or frequent misting encourage the best possible plant performance.
Feeding Ebony Alocasia
Fertilize the Ebony Alocasia when the plant is actively growing. Routine fertilizing about once per month with a diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for houseplants encourages vigorous new growth on the plant.
