Color that shifts from pink to apricot-coral to mauve is the whole point of Emma Bridgewater™ English Shrub Rose. Rosa 'Ausb44a16' opens with a soft golden button eye, then changes tone as the bloom relaxes, so the plant never looks “stuck” on one shade. It matures at about 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, forming a full, upright shrub that fits neatly into borders and pots. We put ours next to the patio so we can easily enjoy the changing colors.
Bred by David Austin and introduced in 2024, it was named for British potter Emma Bridgewater in a collaboration between two heritage brands. The blooms come in repeat flushes through the season, and the bush stays dense enough to look finished even between waves. Fragrance is light-medium and tea-leaning, best appreciated up close. Use it as a small rose hedge, a front-to-mid border anchor, or a statement container where the changing tones can play off nearby foliage. Cut a few stems for a vase and you’ll see the palette shift indoors, too.
Emma Bridgewater™ English Shrub Rose Care
Grow in full sun for the strongest bloom production, although it tolerates part sun where summers are intense. Plant into well-drained soil enriched with compost; a soil pH around 6.0–7.0 keeps nutrients available and growth steady. Water at the base with a slow soak, then wait until the top couple inches dry before watering again, especially in containers. Feed in spring with a balanced rose fertilizer as new shoots lengthen, then repeat after the first flush to keep the next rounds coming. Good air flow around the plant helps foliage stay clean.
In early spring, trim back to shape and remove any thin, crossing stems to keep the shrub sturdy. Deadhead to a strong leaf to speed up rebloom. If you’re growing it in a pot, refresh the top few inches of mix each spring and check moisture more often during heat. A simple mulch layer helps buffer roots from temperature swings.
Emma Bridgewater™ English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space plants about 3 feet apart for a low hedge, or give 4 feet if you want each shrub to stand as a separate specimen. For containers, start with a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep to keep watering more forgiving in summer. Pair it with bacopa, dianthus, or creeping Jenny for a striking flower and foliage contrast.
