Deep pink flower clusters give Enchanted Forest® Gay Goblin™ Pieris mood-lifting early color when shaded beds still look quiet. Pieris japonica 'Cabernet' is an evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage, bronze-red new growth, and pendant bell-shaped blooms from late winter into early spring. It matures about 5 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, so it has enough height for screening without becoming oversized. We think this variety works best near entries and shaded paths, where the flowers can be viewed at close range.
This pieris has a dense, upright habit and slow growth, which makes it easy to keep in bounds with light after-bloom pruning. The evergreen leaves hold through winter, while the flower buds give the plant a finished look before they open. Deer resistance is a useful advantage in woodland gardens, foundation beds, and mixed shade borders. Use it as an accent, in small groups, or as a partial-shade screen where acidic soil-loving shrubs grow well.
Enchanted Forest® Gay Goblin™ Pieris Care
Plant Enchanted Forest® Gay Goblin™ Pieris in partial shade, shade, or morning sun with afternoon protection. It grows best in organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Keep the soil acidic to slightly acidic, ideally around 5.5 to 6.5 pH.
Water regularly during the first growing season, letting the soil stay damp but never waterlogged. After establishment, water when the upper soil begins to dry, especially during heat or dry weather. Feed after flowering with an acid-forming fertilizer, and expect growth to slow in winter while the evergreen foliage remains in place.
Prune right after flowering to shape the shrub or remove any damaged stems. Remove spent flower clusters promptly, taking care not to cut off new growth that will support next year’s buds. Mulch with pine bark or shredded leaves to keep the root zone cool and reduce moisture swings.
Enchanted Forest® Gay Goblin™ Pieris Spacing
Space Enchanted Forest® Gay Goblin™ Pieris about 4 feet apart for a full screen or mass planting. For containers, use a pot at least 20 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic potting mix. Pair it in the landscape with camellia, astilbe, lungwort, or holly bushes for a layered shade planting with similar soil needs. In large containers, underplant with dead nettle or ajuga where filtered light and consistent moisture are available.
