Pearl-white flower chains make Enchanted Forest® River Run™ Pieris one of the earliest shrubs to wake up shaded beds. Pieris japonica 'River Run' carries heavy late-winter buds that open into hanging bell-shaped blooms, followed by glossy red new foliage that matures to deep green. It grows as a mounded evergreen shrub, reaching about 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Place it where winter foot traffic passes close by, since the bud clusters are worth seeing before the rest of the border fills in.
This Enchanted Forest Collection® selection was bred by Sven Svenson and is noted for improved resistance to lace bugs. The rounded habit gives it a fuller presence than narrower pieris, so it works well as a foundation shrub, shaded hedge, or woodland accent. Its evergreen foliage keeps structure in place through winter, and the early flowers support bees and other early-season pollinators. Deer usually leave pieris alone, which helps in shaded neighborhoods where browsing pressure limits plant choices.
Enchanted Forest® River Run™ Pieris Care
Plant Enchanted Forest® River Run™ Pieris in filtered sun, partial sun, or dappled shade with protection from harsh afternoon exposure. It prefers organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained loam with plenty of leaf mold or pine bark worked into the planting area. Keep soil acidic to slightly acidic, roughly 4.5 to 6.5 pH, for healthy green foliage and steady growth.
Water deeply during the first growing season whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Established plants still need moisture during hot or rainless stretches, but the soil should never stay soggy. Feed after blooming with an acid-forming fertilizer for azaleas or rhododendrons. This evergreen plant slows down but does not go dormant during winter and should be sheltered from drying winter winds.
Prune right after flowering, removing spent clusters and any awkward stems before new buds develop for the next year. Avoid heavy cutting into older wood, since the natural mounded shape is part of the plant’s appeal. A 2- to 3-inch layer of pine bark or pine straw helps protect shallow roots, conserve moisture, and support acidic soil conditions.
Enchanted Forest® River Run™ Pieris Spacing
Space Enchanted Forest® River Run™ Pieris 4 to 5 feet apart for a filled-in hedge or mass planting, and 6 feet apart when growing it as a rounded specimen. Use a container at least 16 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic potting mix. Place patio containers in bright shade near an east- or north-facing exposure.
For shaded beds, pair it with barrenwort, foxglove, lungwort, or sweetspire for compatible moisture needs and layered seasonal interest. In containers, use primrose or pansies around the base for cool-season color without crowding the shrub.
