An improved hybrid of browallia, this heat loving annual makes growing this beautiful species much easier than the browallias of the past. Southern gardeners will appreciate the addition of this pure white violet-like flower with its emerald green foliage. Northern gardeners will want to plant this out after all danger of frost is passed as it is cold susceptible. Browallia is a member of the nightshade family and this white version will look great in your spring and summer shade garden.
Native to tropical South American Zone 9a to10b, where it is a woody, shrubby perennial, in zones 3-9 you will find late spring is the best time to plant it. Endless Flirtation Bush Violet makes great container plants, as well as landscape, mass plantings, borders and edgings. Once given the perfect light shade to full shade location, this plant will give you season long blooms.
Endless Flirtation Bush Violet Care
Browallias are not heavy feeders, so fertilize sparingly with a non-nitrogen fertilizer only if necessary. Endless Flirtation hybrid is not the fussy high maintenance plant that its ancestor is. It is, however, susceptible to insect infestation like thrips and spider mites so treatment with an insecticidal soap at first sign of insects will be beneficial. Soil should be well draining as browallias do not tolerate wet soil, and pH levels are maintainable at 5.8 to 6.2 with a top dressing of compost throughout the season.
Deadheading is not necessary as this annual is self-cleaning and is a continuous rebloomer. Should this plant open up and get leggy if you over fertilize, shear it back for renewed vigor and repeat blooming. If you would like to enjoy this plant year round, dig it up and pot it before the first frost. Remember to treat it for any insect infestation prior to bringing indoors.
Endless Flirtation Bush Violet Spacing
This is a medium size upright plant that functions well as ground cover under taller flowers and foliage. Topping out at about 16 inches tall and reaching widths of about 14 inches, give it plenty of air circulation by planting 8 to 10 inches apart. With care and proper placement, this long blooming annual will brighten up your deep shade gardens all season long.
