Sausage Spurge is an interesting and bizarre name for a low-maintenance and unique succulent. Cylindrical stems have an upright growth habit and feature evenly spaced spines on the lower portion. Spatulate leaves, which are narrow at the base and rounded at the ends, grow from the upper portion of the stems. Mature plants boast purple-accented flowers and can stand several feet tall. The botanical name is Euphorbia guentheri.

Best Locations For Growing Euphorbia Sausage Spurge

The Sausage Spurge adds unique greenery to a desk, mantle, or tabletop. Once mature, its height and upright form make it an excellent floor plant. This succulent will flourish in a sunny spot, so any room with lots of sun, whether a living room, bedroom, or office, will be a good location.

Sausage Spurge is not safe to have around curious kids and pets. These plants produce a sap that irritates the skin and is harmful if ingested.

Euphorbia Sausage Spurge Sunlight Requirements

Bright sunlight is vital to growing a robust Sausage Spurge. A spot in a west- or east-facing window or set back from a south-facing window will ensure the plant receives plenty of light. They can handle limited amounts of direct sunlight if they are gradually acclimated to it. Be careful and take your time if you choose to acclimate the plant to full sun.

Euphorbia Sausage Spurge Care

Repot your Sausage Spurge every few years. Give the plant a slightly larger pot as necessary. Loose, well-drained soil is best for Sausage Spurge. This plant does not like overly wet conditions, so a potting mix that sheds water is best.

Pruning is not often necessary, but be careful trimming Euphorbias. These plants produce a milky sap when their fleshy stems or foliage are cut or damaged. The sap is a skin irritant, so be careful or wear disposable gloves and clean your pruning shears afterward.

Watering Euphorbia Sausage Spurge

This euphorbia is a succulent, so it requires little water. Let the potting mix dry before watering the plant. When it is time to water, drench the soil and empty excess water from the tray or cover pot. Average and even low humidity are fine for this Euphorbia. This plant naturally grows in arid climates, so dry air makes it feel at home.

Feeding Euphorbia Sausage Spurge

By routinely fertilizing the plant, you help it flourish and increase the odds of your Euphorbia setting flowers. Fertilizer formulated for succulents will provide the nutrition this plant needs.  Feed the Sausage Spurge every four weeks during the growing season. Do not fertilize the plant in the fall or winter.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
