The perfume comes first with Evelyn® English Shrub Rose. Rosa 'AUSsaucer' produces big, many-petaled blooms that smell like fresh peaches and apricots layered over a classic Old Rose base. The flowers open in a soft apricot wash that often picks up a blush-pink edge, and each bloom can carry close to 100 petals arranged with a tailored, sculpted look. Mature plants reach about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. We like to cut a few stems for the house because the scent actually follows you into the next room.

David Austin introduced this variety in 1991 and named it after Crabtree & Evelyn, who used it for their rose perfume range. Blooms arrive in repeating flushes from late spring through early winter. The foliage is a deep green backdrop that makes the apricot tones look warmer, especially in morning light. In the garden, Evelyn® shines at the back of a mixed border where the flowers can float above companions, or as a single specimen where fragrance is the point. It can also be trained as a small climber in some settings, which helps if you prefer to lift the bloom display higher.

Evelyn® English Shrub Rose Care

Plant in full sun, with at least six hours of direct light, to keep bloom size and fragrance at their best. Prepare a wide planting area and amend the soil with compost. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0–7.0. Water slowly at the base so moisture reaches deeper roots, then let the soil dry slightly between waterings rather than staying constantly wet. Start feeding when new growth is 6–8 inches long using a rose fertilizer, and repeat after the first flush to support steady rebloom. In hot climates, a little afternoon shade helps the apricot tones hold longer.

Prune in late winter to early spring, focusing on removing weak wood and shortening remaining canes to keep the shrub from getting lanky. If stems arch under the weight of blooms, use a discreet ring support early in the season. Deadhead to a strong outward-facing leaf to speed up the next round of flowers. Refresh mulch as temperatures rise to reduce stress and keep roots cooler.

Evelyn® English Shrub Rose Spacing

Space plants about 3 feet apart to allow air flow while keeping the planting full. For containers, choose a pot at least 22–24 inches wide and deep since this is a larger shrub rose. Good partners include Japanese anemone, foamy bells, and spring-flowering daffodils at the base for early color.
