Bring backyard snacking to a whole new level with the Everbearing Mulberry Bush. This compact fruiting shrub produces sweet, richly flavored berries over a long season, so you’re not stuck waiting for a single harvest. It’s self-fruitful, fast to bear, and sized right for small gardens, patios, and large containers.
Spring brings soft catkin blooms, followed by flushes of glossy berries that ripen from red to deep purple-black. The tidy, rounded habit fits beautifully along fences or as a productive accent near outdoor seating. Plant one where you can pick a handful on your way out the door.
Everbearing Mulberry Bush Care
Plant in full sun for 6–8+ hours daily to maximize fruiting. Provide well-drained soil, loam or sandy loam preferred, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0–7.5. Water deeply the first season, then water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry; during fruit set and heat waves, aim for about 1 inch of moisture per week. Mulch 2–3 inches deep to moderate soil temperature and reduce weeds, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer (for example, 5-5-5 organic or 10-10-10) following label rates; in long growing seasons, a light midsummer top-up is helpful. Prune in late winter to early spring to maintain a bushy, open shape and good airflow; remove dead, crossing, or inward growth.
Hardy in roughly Zones 5–9 depending on selection; in colder zones or where late frosts are common, protect early flowers from cold snaps. Container-grown plants need excellent drainage and winter protection where deep freezes occur.
Everbearing Mulberry Bush Spacing
For a single specimen, allow 6–8 feet of width and keep 3–4 feet from walls, paths, or fences for airflow and picking access. For a fruiting hedge, plant 4–5 feet on center and maintain at 5–7 feet tall with annual pruning.
In containers, start with an 18–24 inch diameter pot (20–25 gallons) with large drainage holes; upsize as roots fill the container. Place containers in unobstructed sun and rotate monthly for even growth. Stake only in windy sites; remove supports after establishment.
Why Grow Everbearing Mulberry Bush?
-
Nonstop harvest window with berries from early summer to frost
-
Self-fruitful and fast to produce, often fruiting the first or second year
-
Compact habit ideal for small spaces and large containers
-
Low-maintenance care with good heat tolerance and reliable performance
-
Wildlife friendly; birds love the fruit, and you can net a branch or two to save your share
Note: Ripe fruit can stain paving and clothing; plant away from driveways and high-traffic hardscape. If your plant is grafted, keep the graft union above soil level and remove any suckers that sprout below it.
