- Grow Healthy Cabbage In Under 60 Days!
- 12-18 Inches Tall
- 18-24 Inches Wide
- Plant in Full Sun
Are you an impatient gardener, one that likes to see results quickly? Well, Fast Vantage may be the cabbage you have been looking for. Maturing in just under 60 days, Fast Vantage will satisfy your need for speed. This is quite an advantage, too, if your cool season in the spring is short. Summer heat can affect cole crops like cabbage, making them loose and more prone to stop adding bulk unto the heads. Fast Vantage will leap out of the starting gate and develop a nice, tight 2 ½ pound head in just two months, which is up to 6 weeks earlier than some other varieties of cabbage.
Basically, cabbage is a fat free food, packing a load of vitamins and minerals that our bodies can utilize. One cup of raw cabbage has 22 calories and 2.2 grams of fiber. It can be eaten raw when sliced in a salad, roasted in wedges or slabs with just a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper, or incorporated into a soup. Shredding it, salting it, and fermenting it in a crock makes sauerkraut, an important source of probiotics, healthy bacteria for our gut health. However you fix it, cabbage does a body good and tastes great!
Fast Vantage Cabbage Plant Care
Start seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before your area’s last frost date. Plant seedlings in your garden about 2 to 3 weeks before that last frost date. Don’t worry, your cabbage will take the cool weather in stride. It actually loves the cool rather than hot weather. Plant it out on a day that is overcast for best results. Your 59 days to maturity starts when you put your seedlings into the ground. Harvest your head of cabbage by slicing it off at the base of the head, leaving the root in the ground for a second flush of growth that may give you a smaller head yet this season.
Growing Fast Vantage Cabbage Plants
Sow more seeds indoors for a midsummer planting, and subsequent fall harvest, especially if your summers get hot quickly. You will want to plant cabbage in a full sun location, with at least 6 hours of sun per day. If you utilize the square foot gardening method, plant one cabbage per square foot. This cabbage will grow to about 16 inches tall and will spread out its outer leaves to about 24 inches.
Cabbage can be planted in raised beds if your native garden soil is not loose enough. Container growing may be a challenge, but it can be done. Balcony gardens can be successful with enough sunlight, just give the cabbage a container of its own, one that is twice as wide as the finished head of cabbage would be best, an 18 inch round planter at the minimum.
Watering Fast Vantage Cabbage
Cabbage are heavy drinkers, requiring about 1 ½ inches of water per week. Keep soil consistently moist, and water in the morning for best absorption, especially on hot days. Mulch to help retain that moisture.
Feeding Fast Vantage Cabbage Plants
Amend good garden soil with several inches of good compost, working it deep into the soil. Your cabbage is going to send down a taproot into that nutritious soil. Side dress with a nitrogen based fertilizer a couple weeks after planting in the ground.
