The feathery foliage of Fennel adds visual interest to an herb garden while attracting pollinators like butterflies. The foliage can be harvested at any time for use, raw or cooked. The foliage can also be dried for future use. Routinely trimming the plant will promote full, bushy upright growth. The bulbs are ready to be picked when the base of the stem appears swollen.
Fennel Care
Plant Fennel after there is no longer a chance of frost. At least 6 hours of sunlight is necessary to support this fast-growing plant. The soil should be rich, slightly acidic, and moist but allow good drainage.
Growing Fennel
You can start to pick the foliage as needed throughout the growing season. The bulb can be harvested when the stems begin to look swollen. This large plant can reach 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide, so select a spot that can accommodate a sizable plant. Space plants 6 to 12 inches apart. It's a perennial in growing zones 4 - 9.
Growing Fennel in Containers
Growing in a container is a good option for Fennel to prevent the plant from self-seeding. Select a pot that is 10 inches wide and has drainage.
Watering Fennel
Soil should be evenly moist but not soggy. Deeply water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Feeding Fennel
Fennel is not a heavy feeder, and amending the soil with organic compost during planting is typically enough to sustain the plant. You can apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to support new growth.
