Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo creates a lush, fine-textured curtain of green in a compact, well-behaved clump. Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf' grows slender green culms and small, fern-like leaves packed closely along the stems. It typically matures around 9 to 12 feet tall, though it may grow taller in ideal warm-climate conditions. We appreciate it most as a short privacy hedge where a solid green wall is needed but overhead height is limited.
This clumping bamboo is native to China and stays contained from the base rather than traveling through the landscape like running bamboo. The foliage becomes especially dense after trimming, making it one of the better bamboo choices for a sheared hedge. It is evergreen in mild climates, deer resistant, and useful in patios, narrow side yards, pool screens, and small-space privacy plantings. In colder zone 7b gardens, it may defoliate or die back after severe freezes, then regrow from the base when the root system remains hardy.
Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo Care
Plant Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo in full sun to part sun, with partial shade useful in hot afternoon exposure. It grows best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil with organic matter mixed through the planting area. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 6.0 to 7.0, supports strong root and foliage growth.
Water new plants regularly so the root ball stays evenly moist while roots establish. Once established, water deeply when the top few inches of soil dry or when curled leaves fail to reopen after the heat of the day passes. Mulch around the clump to conserve moisture, protect shallow roots, and improve cold resilience. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertilizer, then repeat during the growing season if the hedge is being trimmed often.
Prune in early spring to remove dead or winter-damaged culms and improve airflow inside the clump. For a dense hedge, shear after the new leaves expand, then refine the sides as needed through the warm season. Container plants should be divided every few years when the root mass fills the pot or water runs through too quickly.
Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo Spacing
Space Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo 3 to 5 feet apart for a privacy hedge, or 6 to 8 feet apart when individual clumps should remain more distinct. Use a sturdy container at least 20 inches wide for young plants, with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive potting mix. Potted bamboo needs more frequent watering than in-ground plants, especially during hot weather and active new shoot growth.
For containers, pair Fernleaf Multiplex Bamboo with lobelia, elephant ears, or fuchsia where bright shade and regular moisture are available. In landscape beds, sweetshrub makes a strong nearby shrub companion for moist, well-drained soil, while liriope can handle the lower edge of a hedge planting. For sunnier garden fronts, agastache and tickseed contrast well with the fine bamboo foliage and prefer the same drainage quality.
