Low Maintenance

The fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata, also called banjo fig) is an attractive interior-decorating favorite. These plants are grown for their unique, violin-shaped leaves. The glossy, green foliage has prominent, pale-colored veins that create a wonderful texture. This plant is a native of Western Africa’s tropical lowlands.

Best Locations For Growing Fiddle Leaf Fig

The fiddle leaf fig is a great accent in any room that gets adequate light. Many interior decorators have been using this tree as a focal point in their designs. This plant doesn’t do well with temperature fluctuations so avoid placing it near doors and drafts.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Sunlight Requirements

The fiddle leaf fig requires bright indirect sunlight to thrive. Place it near an east- or west- facing window for best results. It would also do well in a south-facing window, provided that the bright light is filtered by an outside tree or sheer curtain. Placing the fiddle leaf fig in direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. If this plant is kept in low light conditions for long periods of time, it will fail to grow.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Care

The fiddle leaf benefits from annual pruning and repotting in the spring. Prune to cut back damaged leaves or to control the size of the plant. When repotting, use a well-draining soil and a sturdy container that’s only about two inches larger than the old container.

Watering Fiddle Leaf Fig

Water your fiddle leaf fig when the top one to two inches of soil are dry. This plant prefers its soil to be slightly moist, but not soggy. The fiddle leaf benefits from high humidity. If your climate is very dry, you can mist the plant with clean water or place it near a humidifier.

Feeding Fiddle Leaf Fig

During the spring and summer months, fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer once per month. When the plant’s growth slows in the winter, there’s generally no need to fertilize.
