- Silver foliage contrasts perfectly with bright yellow flowers!
- Growing Zone 9 - 10
Fuzzy button-like yellow flowers crowd silvery foliage on this low mounding, slightly trailing annual making it the perfect accent for your full sun cottage garden or containers. Here is a plant that complements nearly every flower or foliage annual you could pair it with. Cool silver foliage contrasts with bright yellow button flowers, so this plant brings bright color and that coveted silvery grey note to all your arrangements.
Native to Tasmania and Australia, Zones 9a to 10b, this bright annual can tolerate some frost once established in Zones 3-8. Place it as a trailing interest in your large containers or window planters. It is a continuous bloomer and appreciates a full sun location. Chrysocephalum also tolerates dry soil and will help you tackle that one dry spot that never seems to grow anything.
Flambe Yellow Strawflower Care
Plant care is easy as it is heat and drought tolerant and is not typically susceptible to insect infestation. Downy mildew has been observed in plantings without adequate air flow and too much moisture. Well draining soil is preferred with a neutral pH, 6.0 to 6.5; and it requires only infrequent watering when in ground. Fertilize once in the season for in ground plantings, and on a regular schedule for container applications.
Deadheading is not necessary, in fact, this plant tucks itself in by crowding out spent blossoms with new growth and blooms. It is a continuous bloomer once established and will bloom until fall. It is somewhat salt tolerant making this a good plant for coastal areas as it also tolerates sandy soil. Light pruning will keep it within bounds, or just let it spill over for an attractive look.
Flambe Yellow Strawflower Spacing
Spacing is important here as this low growing, mounding plant needs room to spread out. Chrysocephalum tops out at 8 to 14 inches, spreading 8 to 12 inches, and can trail up to 24 inches. Space plantings 8 to 12 inches apart. Pair it with warm to hot color calibrachoa, gomphrena, superbena, petunia annuals or spike/arching grasses for an attractive presentation and great color contrast.
