Flame Thrower® Redbud Tree brings a color show you can see from the curb. New heart-shaped leaves flush burgundy, warm to golden yellow, then settle into rich greens as the season progresses, all on a compact, rounded canopy that fits today’s yards.
Come early spring, rosy-purple flowers pop along bare branches, inviting pollinators before foliage unfurls. Use it as a front-yard focal point, a patio anchor, or a jewel in mixed beds wherever you want high impact with low fuss.
Flame Thrower® Redbud Tree Care
Give this tree full sun to part shade. Aim for 6 or more hours of direct morning sun, with afternoon shade in hotter climates (Zones 8–9). Plant in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.5; avoid sites that stay wet.
Water deeply during the first two growing seasons—about 1 inch per week, or when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry—then water during prolonged dry spells. Apply a 2–3 inch mulch ring to conserve moisture, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced tree/shrub fertilizer per label directions. Prune after flowering or in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches; redbuds bloom on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning just before spring. Hardy in Zones 5–9; in windy Zone 5 sites, choose a sheltered location to minimize winter tip dieback.
Many plants are grafted—remove any shoots that arise from below the graft.
Flame Thrower® Redbud Tree Spacing
For a specimen, allow 12–15 feet from walls, paths, and other trees to accommodate a mature canopy of about 15–20 ft H × 15–20 ft W. For a small grove or informal screen, space 10–12 feet on center. Keep 4–6 feet back from sidewalks and drive edges for comfortable branch clearance.
Container growing works as a short-term showcase: start with a 20–24 inch wide pot (16–18 inches deep) with drainage, upsize as needed, and plan to transplant to the landscape within 2–3 years. Stake only in exposed sites and remove stakes within one year.
