If you’re just starting out as a green thumb, this is the plant for you. Snake plants are well known for “thriving on neglect". While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, the Forest Star Snake Plant is an easy-to-care for succulent, perfect for the home or office. Also known as Snake Plant Laurentii and Mother-in-Law's Tongue, this variety is native to tropical West Africa and Nigeria. Its sturdy, sword-shaped leaves have a definitive dark-green pattern towards the middle of each stalk. Snake plants are also known to be great air purifiers.
Best Locations For Growing Forest Star Snake Plant
This plant is a great choice for a bedroom, hallway or office, as the plant does not require a lot of light. Just be careful if you have pets, because it is toxic to dogs and cats. They can also be poisonous if ingested by humans, so keep your snake plant away from young children.
Forest Star Snake Plant Sunlight Requirements
Snake plants do best in strong, filtered light, but can tolerate poor light and prolonged shade. Find a warm, sunny location that is protected from hot sun.
Forest Star Snake Plant Care
Snake plants are slow growers, so you will rarely need to repot. Only move up to the next pot size when your container is overflowing with leaves, or roots appear from the drainage holes. Snake plants require average humidity and do best in rooms at about 40 percent humidity and 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Watering Forest Star Snake Plant
The Forest Star Snake Plant needs a bit less water than other succulents. Use the “soak and dry method’, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. While this plant is fairly easy to grow, overwatering can be a problem. You may have overwatered your snake plant if you see yellow leaves. This can lead to root rot. If you notice yellow or soggy leaves, lay off watering, allowing the plant to dry out completely. Remove any dead leaves at the base.
Feeding Forest Star Snake Plant
Snake plants are native to poor, rocky soil, so avoid over-fertilizing. Give Forest Star an all-purpose 10-10-10 plant food like Pennington UltraGreen All Purpose Plant food. Feed once in the spring, and it will slowly release nutrients for up to four months.
