Carex vulpinoidea, commonly known as Fox Sedge, is a soft grass-like perennial that makes a lovely lawn alternative. Each plant forms a small clump of arching, thread-like green leaves. In late spring, this sedge sends up stiff green flower spikes that transition to bronze seedheads. The seeds resemble fox tails, accounting for this sedge’s common name. This native sedge is widely found across North America and adapts easily to most garden conditions.

Fox sedge grows in an attractive mound approximately 1 – 3 feet high and 2 feet wide. It spreads by underground rhizomes to make a small colony. This sedge is pest resistant and does not appeal to deer and other herbivores. It serves as a host plant for skipper butterflies, and its seeds attract birds. This sedge is an excellent choice for rain gardens, stormwater projects, erosion control and wetland restoration.

Fox Sedge Care

Carex vulpinoidea grows well in sun to part shade. It tolerates a range of soil types including those containing clay, silt, loam, and gravel. It prefers moist sites and will even tolerate temporary flooding. It can also tolerate drought after the roots have established. This sedge is not particular about soil pH and does not need to be fertilized.

Fox sedge is semi-evergreen and can be cleaned up in the spring before new growth starts. It requires no special care in the winter.

Fox Sedge Spacing

For mass planting, space these plants approximately 18 inches apart. The plants will spread by underground runners, filling in a large area over time.
