Fragrant Daffodil Thalia opens graceful, pure-white flowers carried two to three per stem, each releasing a sweet spring fragrance. The slender, nodding blooms appear in late midseason to late spring, extending the daffodil season. Narcissus 'Thalia' grows about 12 to 14 inches tall with a narrow habit that fits easily between emerging perennials, along walks, beneath deciduous trees, or into containers near a porch or entry. 

Introduced in 1916, Thalia is a Triandrus daffodil valued for its multi-flowered stems, fragrance, and long garden history. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, it naturalizes steadily when left undisturbed and can develop into broader clumps over time. The white flowers glow against darker groundcovers and are lovely for cutting. Deer and voles generally avoid narcissus because the bulbs and foliage contain toxic compounds.

Plant Fragrant Daffodil Thalia Bulbs in fall, several weeks before the ground freezes, so roots can develop before winter; flowering begins the following spring. Full sun to partial shade is acceptable, including sites beneath deciduous trees that receive good light before the canopy fills in. Plant in fertile, well-drained loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0, avoiding low areas that remain wet through winter.

Plant bulbs about 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward, water thoroughly after planting, and then rely mainly on fall and winter precipitation unless conditions are unusually dry. A light winter mulch can help moderate temperature swings in colder areas. Apply a granular bulb fertilizer in fall as new roots develop, or feed in early spring as the foliage emerges if fall feeding was missed. During spring growth, keep the soil evenly moist, then reduce irrigation as foliage begins yellowing and the bulbs enter dormancy. 

Deadhead faded flowers after bloom, but leave the foliage standing until it yellows and collapses naturally, often 8 to 10 weeks later. Established clumps can be lifted and divided after the leaves have withered if flowering declines from crowding. All parts of narcissus are toxic if eaten, so keep stored bulbs away from dogs, cats, livestock, and children.

Space bulbs about 5 to 6 inches apart in garden beds, or arrange them in loose groups for a broader naturalized display. For containers, use a pot at least 10 inches deep with open drainage holes and a quality, free-draining potting mix. In colder climates, protect outdoor pots from repeated deep freezing while exposing the bulbs to the winter chilling needed for flowering.

Hostas grow well with Thalia beneath deciduous trees because their expanding spring leaves begin covering the area as daffodil foliage starts to decline. Pieris shrubs also pair well in partially shaded beds, providing an evergreen background behind the narrow daffodil foliage and spring flowers. Bacopa can share a cool-season container, filling the lower edge of the pot while the taller white daffodil stems rise above it.
