For an excellent pepper plant for beginners or growers with strict space limitations, look no further than the Fresh Bites Mix sweet peppers. They have a compact growth habit but are covered with attractive 1- to 2-inch peppers throughout the growing season. With a zero Scoville rating, these small sweet peppers are excellent for fresh eating, stuffing, or preserving. This mixture of the Kitchen Minis™ series is typically grown as an annual, but is actually a short-lived perennial, so container-grown plants kept protected from cool weather can bear fruits long beyond the traditional growing season.
Fresh Bites Mix Sweet Pepper Plant Care
These frost-sensitive plants like warm weather, with fruits setting only when night temperatures are between 55 and 75 degrees F, so plant them out in the landscape well after the threat of frost has passed. Container specimens can be started much earlier provided they are kept or brought indoors when there is a threat of cool weather. Plant the Fresh Bites pepper in full sunlight. It prefers well-drained garden or potting soil with a near-neutral pH. Pinch back young plants to encourage a bushier habit. Mulch spread around peppers in the garden also helps to encourage plant vigor.
Growing Fresh Bites Mix Sweet Pepper Plant
Fresh Bites sweet peppers require 75 to 80 days to maturity, with a few more weeks often required to achieve a full red color. They grow 12 to 15 inches tall with a spread of 6 to 8 inches.
These peppers were developed specifically for container growing, so they really shine in this environment. Use a 3- to 8-inch pot with plenty of drain holes, and keep the pot in a sunny spot.
Watering Fresh Bites Mix Sweet Pepper Plant
The Fresh Bites sweet pepper is heat and drought tolerant. Water the plant only when the top two inches of soil are dry to the touch or you notice a slight wilt in the leaves combined with dry soil. When watering container plants, irrigate until water runs through the drainage holes.
Feeding Fresh Bites Mix Sweet Pepper Plant
Pepper plants are heavy feeders. Beginning about two weeks after initial planting, apply a granular, slow-release, balanced fertilizer labeled for vegetables to the soil around the Fresh Bites pepper at a concentration according to manufacturer instructions, and repeat at regular intervals throughout the growing season.
