Firecracker is a step up from many other fuchsias because it has beautiful variegated green leaves edged in white with just a kiss of pink. The 1 ½-inch long, trumpet-like orange-red flowers flare at their tips to invite hummingbirds, which can’t seem to resist fuchsia.
A 30-inch tall upright grower, Firecracker is perfect as a standalone in a pot or as the thriller in a mixed arrangement. Firecracker blooms from planting to a killing frost.
Fuchsia Firecracker Care
Grow Firecracker in the sun or shade in a container. Use a high quality potting mix, which is formulated for drainage, which is important for fuchsia. Firecracker has average water needs, so water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) is not necessary.
Firecracker Fuchsia can be overwintered as a houseplant in a bright, sunny window. Keep an eye open for whitefly, which can be a pest on fuchsia.
Fuchsia Firecracker Spacing
A full, upright plant with a 30-inch spread, grow one Firecracker Fuchsia in a 12-inch pot. Because this fuchsia is tall, space out these plants more than typical and add fillers and spillers to create a lush full planting. Firecracker Fuchsia doesn’t usually do well when planted in the landscape. Consider placing a pot in the landscape where you’d like the look and color of Firecracker Fuchsia.
