A season-long hummingbird magnet for shady spots, Fuchsia ‘Swingtime’ is one of the most popular trailing fuchsias. Its large flowers have bold, red sepals and contrasting double-white frilled skirts. This easy-care, heat tolerant cultivar trails up to 24 inches. It grows 4-12 inches high and spreads 18-24 inches.
Swingtime attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Fuchsias are native to the subtropical regions of Central America and South America, and to New Zealand and Tahiti. It makes a gorgeous spiller in hanging baskets and window boxes. Put it in a planter with Heuchera ‘Georgia Peach’ and a white begonia for a stunning combination.
Fuchsia Swingtime Plant Care
Swingtime is a heavy feeder. Feed it every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer at half-strength. Deadheading and pruning are not needed. Water in a way that keeps the potting mix moist but well drained. Place Swingtime in a location that is part shade to shade.
Fuchsias are not usually happy indoors during the winter months, but it is worth trying. Locate it near a window with bright, indirect sunlight, in daytime temperatures of 60-70 degrees F and cooler at night. Reduce the amount of watering and fertilizing. In the spring when new growth appears, repot the plant; shake off old potting soil and plant it with new soil in a slightly larger pot.
Fuchsia Swingtime Spacing
This plant has a spread of up to two feet. One plant in a hanging basket, windowbox, or other container, with or without other plants, will make a gorgeous statement.
