- Light Requirement is Full Shade to Partial Shade
- Height 8-12 Inches
- Width 12-18 Inches
- Use as a filler when using in containers
Looking almost too intricate to be real, Funky Orange begonia flowers are fully double and flared out, so that they seem to be ready to take off. The color is fully saturated orange red, ready to stop traffic from a distance. It’s both long blooming and heat tolerant, so it won’t stop until frost. Begonias are also attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, adding flutter and life to your garden while feeding important pollinators. Easy-to-love Funky Orange will light up your shady corners and when winter arrives, you can bring it inside as a houseplant.
Funky Orange is the result of a cross between Begonia boliviensis and B. tuberosa, two species of tuberous begonias. It has a trailing-to-mounding habit, rising only to a foot tall, and perhaps 18 inches wide, but it will be covered with flowers. For containers, it can serve as a filler or a spiller in part shade to shade. It would be luminous with lime or dark purple foliage.
Funky® Orange Begonia Care
Begonias will love you back in a spot protected from afternoon sun, and in a container with good drainage. They need consistently moderate moisture, but don’t wish to be overly wet. For the most profuse blooms, fertilize regularly with a water-soluble fertilizer. Air circulation both above and below the soil is important to guard against powdery mildew and stem rot, so a light potting mix, and generous spacing from its companions are helpful.
To bring inside for the winter, cut back on watering in fall when leaves are yellowing. Before the first frost, either bring the containers or the tubers, dug, washed and dried, to a frost-free spot. Store tubers in a dry medium like vermiculite or peat. Replant in late winter about 2.5-3 months before they can go outside in your region (after all danger of frost is gone). Tubers should be planted close to the surface with the concave side up.
Funky® Orange Begonia Spacing
12 to 18 inches would be ideal spacing for Funky Orange. If using a closer range, make sure the potting mix is light, there’s plenty of air around the planting and the mix is kept consistently moist but never soggy.
