Garden Gems® Amethyst Redbud wakes up the garden with a flush of jewel-toned, purple-pink blossoms along bare branches, then follows with heart-shaped foliage that opens burgundy and matures to deep green. The compact, rounded habit fits beautifully near entries, patios, and paths, bringing color at eye level right when you crave it most in early spring.
As the season progresses, textured leaves and elegant branching keep the show going, while pollinators make quick work of the nectar-rich flowers. Use it as a small specimen, layer it into mixed borders, or pair two to frame a view—this redbud adds brightness without overwhelming smaller spaces.
Garden Gems® Amethyst Redbud Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade (aim for 6+ hours of light for strongest bloom) and well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water deeply during the first growing season; once established, provide a thorough soak during dry spells rather than frequent sips. Apply a 2–3 inch mulch ring to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Prune right after spring bloom to shape lightly and remove any crossing or damaged wood; avoid heavy summer or fall pruning. If grafted, remove any shoots that appear from below the graft. Generally hardy in USDA Zones 5–9; protect young trees from harsh winter wind and late frost pockets.
Garden Gems® Amethyst Redbud Spacing
Expect roughly 8–10 ft tall and 7–9 ft wide at maturity. Give a standalone tree 8–10 ft of open space so the rounded crown can develop evenly. Keep 4–6 ft from walls, fences, or walks for airflow and easy maintenance. For an informal pair, plant 9–11 ft on center.
In large containers, choose a sturdy 20–24"+ diameter pot with excellent drainage and position planters 3–4 ft apart so light reaches all sides.
