Garden Gems® Emerald Redbud adds a concentrated burst of spring color to compact landscapes. Cercis canadensis 'NC2014-5' blooms in early spring with rosy pink flowers held close along the bare branches before the leaves arrive. New heart-shaped foliage emerges with a warm red flush and settles into a rich emerald green through the growing season. Its tidy, rounded silhouette and multi-stage display make it easy to design around.
This compact North American redbud selection was developed through work connected to the JC Raulston Arboretum and the Garden Gems® Cercis collection. It matures around 8 to 10 feet tall and wide, with a dense upright habit that suits patios, foundation beds, and urban gardens. The spring flowers support early pollinators, and the tree tolerates clay soil, black walnut, and varied garden conditions once established. Use it as a focal tree near a walkway, in a small front yard, or in a large patio container where a full-sized redbud would outgrow the space.
Garden Gems® Emerald Redbud Care
Plant Garden Gems® Emerald Redbud in full sun to partial shade, providing afternoon shade in hotter climates. It grows in average, well-drained soil with an acidic, neutral, or mildly alkaline pH. Avoid saturated sites, since redbuds need moisture without standing water around the roots.
Water once or twice weekly during the first growing season, checking the soil about 3 inches down before watering. Established trees can handle short dry periods, but deep watering during long summer heat helps protect the foliage and flower buds for the next spring. Apply compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. This tree is deciduous and will drop its leaves in late fall.
Prune after flowering if shaping is needed, removing dead, crossing, or crowded branches first. Keep cuts light so the naturally compact form stays intact. Maintain a 2- to 3-inch mulch layer over the root zone, keeping mulch away from the trunk to reduce bark problems.
Garden Gems® Emerald Redbud Spacing
Space Garden Gems® Emerald Redbud 8 to 10 feet from other small trees or large shrubs. For container growing, use a 20- to 25-gallon pot with drainage and plan for regular watering during warm weather. Plant it in part-sun beds with bleeding heart, Jacob's ladder, lungwort, and summersweet for complementary spring blooms and high pollinator value.
