Genoa Lemon Tree is a compact Italian lemon valued for tart juice, fragrant zest, and a high-oil rind that is especially useful in cooking, baking, drinks, and limoncello-style recipes. Citrus x limon 'Genoa' is an heirloom from coastal Italy, introduced to the U.S. in 1875, and grows about 8 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in the landscape. Compared with many Eureka-type lemons, Genoa offers similar acidic fruit on a denser, more manageable tree that is typically easier to harvest. This is the lemon our growers would choose for a patio citrus collection.

Genoa Lemon Tree Care

Plant Genoa Lemon Tree in spring after frost danger has passed, or in early fall in warm Zones 9 to 11. Plant in full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light, and space outdoor trees 6 to 10 feet apart depending on pruning style. Use rich, loose, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH around 5.5 to 6.5, setting the root crown slightly above soil level. Prune in early spring to shape the canopy, remove dead or crossing wood, and cut away any rootstock suckers below the graft.

Growing Genoa Lemon Tree

Genoa Lemon Tree is self-fertile and usually ripens its main crop in February and March, with fruit ready once the rind is fully yellow and the lemon feels heavy. No chill hours are needed, but the tree must be protected below 32 degrees. Grow indoors over winter in colder zones and place the pot near a bright south-facing window or under strong grow lights before the first freeze.

Growing Genoa Lemon Tree in Containers

Genoa Lemon Tree is a strong choice for patios, sunny porches, greenhouses, and edible container gardens because it stays smaller than many in-ground lemons. Begin with a 10 to 14 inch starter pot or 3 to 5 gallon container, then move up gradually to a 15 to 20 gallon pot as roots fill the mix. Repot in spring every 2 to 3 years, using a chunky citrus mix and a container with several drainage holes. Suitable plant companions include rosemary, thyme, lavender and oregano due to similar growing preferences.

Watering Genoa Lemon Tree

Water young trees deeply when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, then allow the root zone to breathe before watering again. Cupped leaves, wilting that improves after watering, or yellow leaves in wet soil mean the watering schedule should be adjusted.

Feeding Genoa Lemon Tree

Feed Genoa Lemon Tree monthly from spring through early fall with a citrus fertilizer or balanced fruit tree fertilizer that includes micronutrients. Regular feeding supports glossy foliage, flower production, and fruit fill, but pause during winter while growth naturally slows.
