Giant Crocus are among the earliest signs of spring, pushing through chilled soil with cup-shaped flowers in purple, white, and striped violet. Crocus vernus stays 4 to 5 inches tall, yet the 25 large 8-9 cm corms in this balanced mixture can establish a substantial drift when planted together. Their compact size makes them especially useful in lawns, rock gardens, woodland margins, and beneath deciduous trees where spring sunlight reaches the ground before leaves emerge overhead. We enjoy scattering crocus through turf because an established planting looks increasingly generous each spring while requiring very little garden space.

Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, giant crocus forms additional corms over time and can gradually spread through suitable sites when left undisturbed. The flowers arrive in early spring, sometimes while snow is still melting, followed by narrow grasslike foliage that continues growing after bloom. Naturalize them along lawn edges, across gentle slopes, between stepping stones, or beneath open deciduous canopies where larger perennials have not yet emerged. Deer and rabbits may occasionally browse crocus, while squirrels, chipmunks, and voles are more likely to dig newly planted corms, so wire protection can be useful where digging is common.

Fothergilla can anchor a larger naturalized area, with crocus flowering around its base before the shrub develops its full season of leaves and flowers.
