Giant Crocus are among the first flowers to break through cold ground, opening cup-shaped blooms in purple, white, striped, and golden-throated shades at the close of winter and beginning of spring. Crocus vernus stays just 4 to 6 inches tall, making these compact corms easy to scatter through lawns, rock gardens, slopes, and the open soil beneath deciduous trees. Each pack contains 100 dormant corms, enough to establish a broad drift that can become denser as the planting naturalizes.

Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, giant crocus returns annually and can multiply into wider colonies when foliage is allowed to finish its growth cycle. Flowers often open while frosts are still possible and may even emerge through light snow, giving pollinators an early source of forage on mild days. We love crocus in turf because the flowers seem to appear almost overnight, long before the lawn needs its first mowing.

Plant Giant Crocus Mix Bulbs in fall, several weeks before the ground freezes, giving the corms time to root before winter chilling leads into early spring flowering. Full sun to partial shade is suitable, and areas beneath deciduous trees work especially well because abundant light reaches the plants during their short active season. Use loose, well-drained loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0, avoiding sites where water collects around the corms.

Set corms about 3 to 4 inches deep with the growing point facing upward and water the planting site thoroughly. During flowering and leaf growth, provide supplemental water only when spring conditions are unusually dry, then let the soil become drier as dormancy approaches. A light application of balanced bulb fertilizer as growth emerges in spring can help replenish nutrients for the following year. 

No deadheading is required, but the narrow, grasslike foliage should remain until it yellows naturally. In lawns, delay the first mowing over the planting for roughly four to six weeks after flowering, or until the leaves have faded, so the corms have time to rebuild their reserves. Established colonies generally need little intervention unless overcrowding eventually reduces flowering, at which point clumps can be lifted and divided while dormant.

Space corms about 3 to 4 inches apart, or scatter them irregularly before planting to create a less formal drift through turf or woodland ground. For containers and window boxes, use a vessel at least 8 inches deep with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix, placing the corms somewhat closer for a fuller early display. Keep outdoor containers cold through winter but protect them from repeated saturation and severe freeze-thaw exposure in the coldest regions.

Barrenwort works well around crocus planted beneath deciduous trees, developing its foliage later in spring and sharing a preference for woodland-edge conditions and well-drained soil. Witch hazel can anchor a larger naturalized planting, with its woody framework and very early seasonal interest complementing crocus colonies planted around the outer root zone. In sunny rock gardens or containers, hens & chicks provide a low evergreen layer that leaves plenty of open space for crocus flowers to rise through in early spring.
