Giant Hyacinth Mixture Bulbs (Hyacinthus orientalis hybrids) concentrate rich spring color and powerful fragrance into compact flower spikes just 8 to 10 inches tall. The dense clusters of waxy, star-shaped florets come in an assorted range of colors, with each pack containing 12 large 15-16 cm bulbs selected for substantial garden performance. A small group can scent a surprising amount of space in early spring.

These hardy perennial bulbs grow in USDA zones 4-8 and flower in early to mid spring, often before nearby perennials have produced much foliage. The first year's flower spikes are typically the fullest, with established bulbs often producing somewhat looser clusters in later seasons while continuing to return. Their low stature fits the front of borders, path edges, window boxes, and patio pots, and the bulbs can also be chilled and forced indoors for winter flowers. Deer and rabbits generally avoid hyacinths, and squirrels often leave the bulbs alone.

Plant Giant Hyacinth Mixture Bulbs in fall, about 4 to 6 weeks before the ground freezes, so roots can develop before winter provides the cold period needed for spring flowering. Grow them in full sun to partial shade, with ample spring sunlight supporting sturdy, densely flowered spikes. Choose fertile, well-drained loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of approximately 6.0 to 7.0, and improve heavy clay before planting.

Set the bulbs about 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward and water thoroughly to settle the surrounding soil. Keep the bed moderately moist during active spring growth, supplying water when rainfall is limited; reduce irrigation as the foliage yellows and the bulbs enter summer dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer according to label directions as shoots emerge in spring to replenish nutrients for the following year's growth. A 1- to 2-inch mulch layer after the soil cools can help moderate winter temperature fluctuations.

Remove spent flower spikes after flowering, but allow the green leaves to remain until they yellow and decline naturally. Once foliage has finished feeding the bulb, it can be removed. For indoor forcing, pot the bulbs with their tips near the surface, chill them at roughly 40-45°F for 10 to 13 weeks, then move the container into a bright, cool room. Hyacinth bulbs and foliage can cause gastrointestinal irritation if eaten by dogs or cats, and the bulbs may irritate sensitive skin, so gloves are useful during planting.

Space bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart in beds, arranging six or more together when a concentrated patch of fragrance and mixed color is desired. For containers and window boxes, use vessels at least 8 inches deep with drainage holes and position bulbs about 2 to 3 inches apart. Outdoor pots should remain cold through winter but may need shelter in colder climates to prevent the root zone from repeatedly freezing solid.
