Golden Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs produce oversized, golden yellow flowers that can reach about 5 inches across on sturdy 22- to 24-inch stems. This Darwin Hybrid is valued for large flowers, strong stems, and better perennial performance than many other garden tulips. Each pack contains 20 top-size 11–12 cm bulbs that flower in mid spring and make excellent stems for cutting.

Golden Apeldoorn is known for handling typical spring wind and rain well, thanks to thick stems that support its substantial flowers without staking. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, it can return for multiple years in favorable growing conditions. Use it through perennial beds, along long walkways, in dedicated cutting gardens, or in large containers where it gives a spring planting some height.

Golden Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Care

Plant Golden Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs in fall after temperatures cool, generally from September through November depending on climate, and finish planting before the ground freezes. Full sun is preferred, although partial shade is suitable and may help flowers last a little longer in warm spring weather. Choose loose, well-drained loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0, and improve heavy soil before planting.

Set bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed end facing up, then water thoroughly to settle the soil around them. Established bulbs usually need little winter irrigation, while spring growth requires moderate moisture when rainfall is scarce; reduce water after the foliage begins yellowing and entering dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting according to label directions and feed again as shoots emerge in spring to support future flowering.

Remove spent flowers after bloom but leave the stems and green leaves intact until they yellow and decline naturally. Bulbs should be left relatively dry through summer dormancy. Older groups that become crowded can be lifted and divided after the foliage has withered. A 1- to 2-inch layer of mulch applied after the soil cools can help limit repeated winter temperature swings.

Golden Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Spacing

Space bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart in beds, or plant them somewhat closer in large groups when creating a concentrated spring display. Containers should be at least 12 inches deep with generous drainage holes and enough soil beneath the bulbs to accommodate their 6- to 8-inch planting depth. In zones 3-5, protect planted pots from repeated deep freezing by moving them to an unheated garage, shed, or another cold sheltered location for winter.

Golden Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Companion Plants

Sea thrift works well near the front of a sunny tulip planting because its compact evergreen foliage stays low beneath the taller stems in well-drained soil. In larger beds, barberry provides lasting woody structure after the tulips enter dormancy and shares their preference for sunny sites with good drainage. Pansies are useful in large spring containers, covering the soil surface with cool-season flowers while Golden Apeldoorn rises above them.
