Known better as Marguerite Daisy, Argyranthemums are an old species with many cultivars in the Aster family. Sometimes known as Paris Daisy, they are native to the Canary Islands, Spain. In Zones 10a through 11b they are a short-lived tender perennial. In cooler climates they are grown as an annual. With sunshine yellow petals and brighter yellow centers held above fragrant lacy green foliage, this beautiful annual makes a wonderful addition to your spring, summer and fall gardens. Golden Butterfly Marguerite Daisy is an improved variety that is more heat tolerant than older varieties.
This tall upright annual brightens the garden beds, cottage gardens, city gardens, fence rows, mass plantings and large container gardens. A vanilla petalled and a white petalled marguerite daisy are also available and, combined together, make an attractive tall border. If you want a long season bloomer with evergreen foliage, Golden Butterfly is the one for you.
Golden Butterfly Marguerite Daisy Care
Easy maintenance adds more appeal to this tall annual. Tolerant of alkaline, acidic and neutral soils, with a preference for 5.8 to 6.2 pH, it grows just about anywhere there is sun or light shade. Long days or high light availability will increase blooms. Light fertilization with a well draining medium soil is ideal and will also increase blooming and foliage health. Low light locations, tight spacing and wet foliage will make this annual susceptible to disease.
Deadheading is not required as it cleans up after itself. If night time temperatures start to climb, however, blooms may slow or stop until it cools off again. If blooms flush out due to this, a quick shear with sharp scissors to promote branching and new growth will kickstart the blooms once the temperatures become more moderate.
Golden Butterfly Marguerite Daisy Spacing
An upright plant, this marguerite daisy grows to about 36 inches tall and 20 inches wide. It makes a great background plant as well as a medium height plant for taller perennial gardens and fill in the space beautifully. Space plants out 12 to 14 inches to allow air circulation and discourage disease.
