Bring a touch of ancient Egypt to your summer garden this year with Baby Tut umbrella grass. The lush airy foliage looks like bundles of green fireworks exploding at once and lends a softness and grace few plants can equal. Yet unlike the papyrus shading boats on the Nile, this one grows quickly to and stops at about 2 feet high and wide.

Award-winning Baby Tut, a cultivar of cyperus involucratus, can be grown in a water garden, in garden soil, or in containers in both part sun to full sun.

Graceful Grasses® Baby Tut® Umbrella Grass Care

Cyperus are hardy to 25 degrees F; below that they should be considered annuals and replaced next spring. They’re not happy as houseplants. Above 25 degrees the foliage will be evergreen, and the plant won’t really go dormant, making it risky to divide it without affecting cold hardiness. Baby Tut will like a full- to partial sun exposure. Because of its love of water, it can happily decorate a water’s edge or even grow in the water, even in only a few inches. However, only the root ball should be submerged; the crown must be above water level.

This is a case where a plant would prefer less drainage and more moisture for its roots, so if growing in a pot, closing a container’s drain hole will preserve that moisture. Once established, Baby Tut can tolerate occasional dry days. Fertilizer is not necessary; if desired, fertilize at diluted strength or at longer intervals than directed for most plants.

Graceful Grasses® Baby Tut® Umbrella Grass Spacing

Approximately 14-20 inches between plants is about right for spacing out Baby Tut Cyperus.
