Pink, red and white margins with green stripes in the center make this warm weather grass a stand-out in your landscape or container garden. Used as an upright thriller in your containers, it brings the sizzle to your arrangements. Place it in the center of your container for a fountain of color, or as a foundation plant that will drape nicely down the sides of a large pot with a graceful arching habit instead.
Native to Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Zones 9a through 11b, this is a warm season grass that blooms late in the summer when the heat is on. In Zones 2-8 it is treated as an annual, set out after the danger of the last frost, and not expected to survive over winter where temperatures fall below 20 degrees. Although an invasive in some long season areas of the country, you will not have that problem when grown as an annual as it rarely sets seeds.
Graceful Grasses Fireworks Variegated Red Fountain Grass Care
As with most grasses, care is easy as it is not a fussy plant. An average soil with pH level of 5.8 to 6.2, with a watering regimen of once a week or so when it is dry, this sun loving annual typically requires little to no fertilizer. In warmer regions it will brown for the winter and you have the choice to cut it down in late fall or early spring, or leave it for winter-long interest in your garden. In cooler climates do not expect this plant to return in the spring from the roots.
Deadheading is not necessary and pruning is rarely needed. Should your season be long enough to allow the grass to produce a seed head, simply pruning this off before maturity will curb its possible spread via the seeds. Pair this tall annual with petunias and calibrachoa or verbena and lantana in a larger container, or mass it out in your landscape or border for a lovely display.
Graceful Grasses Fireworks Variegated Red Fountain Grass Spacing
This annual grass can grow up to 30 inches tall and spread up to 24 inches wide. Space plantings 24 to 30 inches wide to allow plants to spread out and gracefully arch. Birds will be attracted to the seed pods in long season regions. It has no significant insect or plant diseases to be concerned about, so plant this lovely grass in your garden to add that sizzle you’ve been missing.
