The Green Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a flowering perennial, native to tropical South Africa. This popular houseplant features thin, ribbon-like leaves that grow from a central point and bend downward, giving it the appearance of a spider. The Spider Plant is able to produce long flower stalks that also come from the central rosette growth point. This plant is loved by houseplant enthusiasts because it’s among one of the easiest houseplants to grow. It also goes by the names “Airplane Plant”, “Ribbon Plant” and “Spider Ivy”.
Best Locations For Growing Green Spider Plant
The cascading nature of the foliage and the long flower stalks make it a great plant for high spaces like up on a shelf or hanging in a basket. The easy-care nature of the Spider Plant makes it a perfect addition to any office or household.
Green Spider Plant Sunlight Requirements
Spider Plant ‘Green’ prefers medium-bright indirect light. It does not like to be in bright direct sunlight, which can cause browning tips or scorched leaves. Place your Spider Plant in a window with east or west exposure for best growth results.
Green Spider Plant Care
This plant grows fairly quickly and will need to be repotted about once every other year. Pick a well-draining, loamy houseplant potting mix. Spider Plant ‘Green’ isn’t particular about soil pH.
Watering Green Spider Plant
During the growing season, keep your plant’s soil moist to encourage growth and blooms. Spider Plant ‘Green’ tolerates average household humidity and temperatures, but can be picky about water. Browning tips could be caused by harsh salts and chemicals in some public tap waters. If you see browning leaf tips, try switching to filtered water.
Feeding Green Spider Plant
Fertilize Green Spider Plant up to twice per month during the spring and summer growing season. In order to avoid overfertilization, don’t feed during the winter months.
